Since its humble beginning candles have evolved not only in how they look but also how they are made. The need to light up his surrounding, arose from the fact that man is afraid of the dark. This fear forced him to find material which could burn and give him light and heat, though wood was the natural choice but its hard to light on its own Man soon learned to cook and roast his kill, the process was the key to the realisation that fat in the animal not only prolong the fire but also flared it up. When and how did he learn to use the tallow or fat to make torches - is debatable.
